Imagine a fraudster gaining access to your account and changing your password. You would no longer have access to your data, your Messenger messages, your contacts, etc. What would be the impact on your business? Unfortunately, this is what happens to many users in Canada, who fall victim to hacking of their personal and professional pages.

Here are 4 steps to guide you in securing your Facebook accounts so that no one can lock you out.

1. Regularly Check and Test Your Privacy Settings

Your digital reputation is at stake. Who can see you? Who can contact you? Everyone? Only your friends? Is your information public or private?

Make sure your information is not exposed for all to see. Publishing sensitive information on the Internet could have serious consequences. Think about protecting your digital reputation and your privacy settings. Regularly check and test these privacy settings, especially since they can change frequently.

Indeed, Facebook, in its dynamic development of services and applications, often modifies its settings. So, go to "Settings and Privacy" to regularly adjust and test these options.

How to do it? Simply click on your photo in the upper right corner of the screen. You can then select "Settings and Privacy" then "Privacy" from the dropdown menu. This will give you access to a range of options for managing and protecting your data, your private life, and your confidentiality.

2. Keep Control Over What Is Published on Your Profile

The web is vast, and not everyone has good intentions. By allowing free posts on your profile, you risk exposing your network to malicious content.

By allowing everyone to post on your profile without supervision, someone could post fraudulent content and your contacts could fall into this trap.

Now, fortunately, you can supervise: simply enable the option to receive a notification when other users post on your timeline, so you can review and decide whether to display the post or not. Enable notifications for each new post, and decide what is displayed.

3. Don't Click on External Links

Just like in emails, malicious links can hide on Facebook. We are aware of links received by email, but the same strategy is found elsewhere on the Internet, and very often on social networks.

Ignore posts with suspicious links, even if sent privately, even if they come from friends. They could hide a virus... That's also what fraud prevention is about! So, even if a link comes from a friend, think twice before clicking on a web link.

4. Choose a Strong Password and Enable Two-Factor Authentication

The first line of defense for your account is your password.

Protect your online account with a strong and unique password. The longer a password is, the stronger it is. A good password should contain at least 16-18 characters.

Enable two-factor authentication. This allows a second verification through an authentication code. Simple, quick measures that can make a big difference in managing your account security and preventing hacking of your online accounts.

How to do it? To enable two-factor authentication, just follow a few steps.

First, you need to go to your Settings and Privacy again. However, this time, click on the Settings tab. Once the new page loads, you can click on Security and Login, which is in the dropdown menu on the left side of your screen. On this new page, you will have the option to use two-factor authentication.
